There’s a specific smell that hits Green Bay in September; cut grass mixed with the first hint of woodsmoke, a little bit of stadium bratwurst carried on the wind on game days. It’s the smell of a season change, and it’s your cue that summer’s grace period on home maintenance is officially over. Winter doesn’t wait, and neither should you.

Before you actually need heat, get your furnace serviced and swap the filter. It’s a cheap appointment now versus an emergency, after-hours one on the coldest night of the year, a distinction every Wisconsinite has learned the hard way at least once.
3. Seal up the drafts
Run your hand along window and door frames on a breezy day. Any draft you feel now is a draft your heating bill will feel all winter. A few dollars of weatherstripping and caulk is one of the best returns on investment in home maintenance, full stop.
4. Make the outside as nice as the inside
Curb appeal isn’t just a selling term. It’s the first thing you see pulling into your own driveway every day for the next six months. Trim back the summer growth, tuck away the hoses, and if you’ve got a porch that’s seen better days (ours is currently exhibit A – the stair remodel is on our own to-do list this year), fall is a great time to finally tackle it before the ground freezes and contractors get busy with snow season.
5. Actually enjoy the season
Fall prep isn’t only about chores. It’s also an excuse to get outside before it’s too cold to want to. Grab apples at one of the local orchards, hit a farmers market while they’re still running, or just accept that Sundays are now a Packers-shaped block on the calendar. Green Bay does fall well; the to-do list is easier to stomach with cider in hand.
